Throughout the summer we have been hosting a series of introductory burns for our volunteers and other curious honorary pirates. Fire jams are a regular feature of Berlin subculture, but can often seem intimidating or closed off to outsiders to get involved and participate. To break the illusion of grandeur and complexity, we created the concept of a fire playground, with accessible fire props like palm torches and interactive movement games to encourage people to build shapes together and experiment in a safe performance space.
We brought our set up to Volkspark Friedrichshain and Insel der Jugend and held the space for participants to have their first burn, alongside other more seasoned fire spinners in a supportive atmosphere. Thanks to the Berlin fire community for inspiring and being there. We’re already looking forward to the next.
